I've been having run on RoyalRoad, the people there are a good time, but I think it's time for me to take my show on the road. Ha. Pun. Ish.
Having an audience on there is cool, but oh boy, working for tips that don't materialize is kind of disheartening. Writing on a platform that guarantees that I get paid for views would be really really nice. Plus, as I recall, the community for it was really nice as well.
If I was still doing Fan Fiction (YES, I used to, oh my) then I'd be less sad about making $0, but this is all my personal work, my world building, my character creation, everything. Plus, I was a teenager back when I did that sort of writing. Maybe I'm being selfish, maybe the views and everything like that should be enough, but views and exposure don't help pay the bills, buy dinner, or entertain my kid so I can actually write. C'est la vie. Capitalism, what can ya do.
Wish me luck that they accept my application, and I can get back to it.
I don't think you are being selfish for doing what is best for you. It is your work after all, and you don't owe us readers anything.
ReplyDeleteI find donations and patreons are often hit-and-miss in royalroad, so I think I can understand where you are coming from, as much as it pains me as one of those pesky free readers.
